There is something awe inspiringly mystically about the Pitons of St. Lucia and regardless of how many times you see them they are always so stunningly fresh.

I was first mesmerized by the Pitons when at 9 years old my mom got posted to the hospital in Soufriere. She was a resident nurse at the hospital and I spent a few weeks there with her until she found a family in the community to board me. Waking in the mornings and looking up and over the surrounding rooftops to Petite Piton I was always amazed at how the mountain would change form literally from minute to minute.

One moment it would be raining and the top of the peak would disappear in a blanket of cloud. Then the next moment the top would peek out in a burst of golden sunlight, but now floating clouds would cast a shadow on the flanks of the mountain. The more I watched the mountain is the more it would change form in a never ending dance of what I could only describe as “guess what I’ll look like next?!”
So, as I sat over at Jade Mountain waiting to shoot a wedding, I was reminded of how the mountain would mesmerize me way back when I was little, and I wanted to capture the essence of that feeling and save it for posterity. So I fired off a couple of shots, and although they we nice they lacked what I like to call “the magic touch”… like when the sun would blast through the clouds shrouding the mountain top and bathe it with a golden brilliance.

I stood for a while just soaking in the serene ambiance of the shimmering ocean with the emerald grandeur of the mountains rising skywards out of the ocean and I must have been transported to some distant place. I say this because I didn’t even notice when the speedboat first entered the bay. But all of a sudden I was aware of it speeding across the bay and a light bulb went off in my head that this speeding boat was the “magic touch” I had been yearning for.

I took this single shot, looked down at my screen and quietly shouted “BOOM!” as I could see that I had nailed the shot. In that instant I was taken back in time to being 9 years old and sitting and staring in amazement at the mountain before me. I went on to shoot one of my best weddings ever. Then when I got home and finally pulled up the Emerald Green Pitons on a big screen, I came to truly appreciate the magic that I was so lucky to have captured. This is just about the most vibrantly green I’ve seen the Pitons … and that speedboat bursting across the bay simply tied it all together.
