People often ask how do I manage to see the images I create. Truth is I really don’t know how I see it. But I’ve come to realize that I see the world though a lens that is different and my images are my way of sharing with the world the amazing things that I see.

A large Caribbean corporation had commissioned me to produce some images showcasing Saint Lucia and Rodney Bay Marina was one of the locations on the list. So I went into the marina and shot all of the usual images that my client would have expected. Then right after leaving the marina I spotted this “Pumpkin” sitting in the water and thought to myself – “Yeah, she must be somebody’s Pumpkin!”

But it was already too late in the day to create the image that was floating in my head. So I decided that I’d return at an earlier hour another morning and hope the boats would be similarly positioned on my return. When I returned a few days later I was delighted by both the morning tranquility and the positioning of the boats.

Luck was certainly on my side! So I pulled up on the side of the road ahead of Pumpkin and her friend, the other boat, grabbed my gear and set up.

I wanted to shoot the boats at eye level so I’d be looking across them rather than looking down on them. This required me to crouch down low as there was hardly any shoulder between the road and the drop off into the water. As I tried finding the best spot for crouching down, I couldn’t help recalling the story a friend shared with me that this entire marina and surrounding lands had once been a mangrove swamp. He told the story of the area being dredged out and how it had been mosquito infested and how no one wanted to buy the land as they feared that the sea would eventually come and reclaim what rightfully belonged to it. My friend shared that he didn’t subscribe to this point of view and proceeded to put his money where his mouth was and he bought up all the land he could afford.

It’s amazing to see how much this land has developed and how much the marina has developed too. Yet despite all of this development and all of the multi million dollar mega yachts berth over on the other side of the marina pictures such as this one of a traditional skiff at rest in the bay evoke such a sense of what was the normal over here not so long ago.

By getting down low and also getting up close and personal with these little boats I was able to make them loom large in the shot while the much bigger boats in the background appear quite small. I loved the fact that the next biggest and most recognizable object in the image is Mount Pimant in the distance and I wondered what stories that mountain could tell of all the changes it has watched come and go.

Then my mind flowed back to the skiff in front of me and I thought to myself would little boats like this always be able to berth like this or will they at some point loose this spot due to growing development.

But regardless of what happens you now have this picture, thus ensuring that this moment in time of Pumpkin Tranquility will live on forever!
