Kneeboarding in St Lucia
Signed Kirk Elliott Prints
If you’re an ocean person I’m guessing that this image makes you just wanna jump into beach attire and head for the ocean; and if you’re not a beach person I wonder if this image might just be able to make a convert out of you.
I got a call from a resort on one of the most popular bays in Saint Lucia as they needed some room shots quick, fast and in a hurry. I went in the day before to check out the room and was delighted to discover that it looked out onto the scene from this picture. I went in really early the following day as I wanted to capture the golden glow of the early morning light, then work my way through the mid morning when the light would be more vibrant and crisp.
It was quite a bit of effort setting up lighting so that the inside of the room would be lit to the same intensity as the outdoors while at the same time not creating any harsh distracting shadows within the room. On top of this I had to keep an eye out for the changing outdoor light and constantly be adjusting my flashes to match its changing intensity as the clouds ebbed and flowed.
As if this were not enough to contend with, I then discovered that the glass sliding doors were causing reflections every time I shot a picture and my only solution was to have those doors removed. I called up reception requesting that someone from their maintenance team come over to remove the doors. I proceeded to await their arrival so I could then get on with the work. Now this was in the height of COVID and hotels were operating with skeleton staff so I expected to wait for a while for someone from maintenance to come over.
As I waited I delighted in the calm peacefulness of the views looking out from the room’s balcony at the yachts gently bobbing in the bay. Then I waited, and I waited, and I waited. After my second call to reception asking when might someone from maintenance arrive, I decided to take matters in my own hands and got up and checked out the hinges on the door. I figured I could slacken them and remove the doors myself. So I set to it and in less than 10 minutes I had both doors off and got back into photographing the room, complete with the views beyond the now open space and without those pesky reflections.
Just as I finished shooting and was getting ready to replace the doors a speedboat from a nearby hotel came charging through the bay with a kneeboarder in tow. The speedboat made its way from right to left then made a loop and returned the way it come in. It disappeared behind the wall of the hotel room only to return a short while later again going from right to left. And then it hit me – What a cool picture this could be.
So I grabbed my camera and waited for the speedboat and kneeboarder to loop round like the last time and head back from left to right. Being from the islands and spending a lot of time at the seashore near beach resorts I figured that this kneeboarder still had a few more laps before his time would be up. So I waited for them to come back from the right and prepared to squeeze off what I figured would be some winning shots seeing as it was such a beautiful morning.
Looking at the images on the camera I could tell that I had nailed the shot. But it was when I got home and pulled up the pics on my larger monitor that I said “WOW, WOW, WOW!” I thought to myself – who would have thought that by waiting all that time for maintenance to come by I would have ended up being at the hotel long enough to get this really cool shot. At that moment I could hear my grandma’s voice ringing in my head with one of her stoic sayings when things didn’t go according to plans: “All bad luck is not in danger; and all in danger is not lost!”
Here’s to the wisdom of grandmas…
