Lily Ponds are such vibrant ecosystems of serene tranquility and this one sitting at the entrance to the Auberge Seraphine mini hotel in Castries, Saint Lucia’s capital city, is a beautiful example that’s not difficult to get to.

The Auberge Seraphine has always been my preferred location for hosting meetings, especially when attendees are coming from the city area. The owners have always been supportive of my efforts at working to raise standards of delivery across various industries and the staff have always fed off the owners’ energies, thus making Auberge so dear to me.

Now one can’t help noticing the lily pond at the entrance to the hotel and the million or so egrets that make a nearby tree their home. Okay, not quite a million egrets, but I’m sure the “slight” exaggeration conjured up an image for you, and it’s that image I wanted you to see.

Arriving in the late afternoon for a meeting I’d always tell myself that I must really make time to return to shoot pictures of the pond and the lilies and whatever else caught my eye. But by the time our meetings were over it would be dark, the lilies would be closed and I’d be in a bit of a hurry to get home to catch up on things that had slipped through the cracks during the day.

Then one evening it dawned on me that if the lilies were closed at night, they very likely would be open in the morning. So I asked the staff about this and they confirmed my thoughts. I returned the following morning just to see what the pond looked like and I instantly saw promise as I toyed with a variety of angles from which I could shoot. I let the owners know that I’d be returning to shoot a few days later and that I would be arriving before dawn so I could witness the pond coming to life in the morning and that I was sure I’d find a keeper or two in the resulting pictures I’d shoot.

I arrived around 5:00 AM a few days later, set up my gear and waited for dawn to break and for the pond to come to life. Well, it wasn’t until around 7:30 AM that the action got really nice. You see, although it was bright from about 5:30 AM the sun was blocked by the hill and the trees to the east of the hotel and it was only when it crested them and shone its golden glow directly onto the lily pond that the colours really popped. By this time the pond was alive with a variety of birds making their way across the lily leaves floating on the surface. The birds were busy plucking breakfast out of the pond and this made for some interesting shots of them doing their thing.

I found the egrets to be the most majestic of the birds, probably due to them being white and standing out more against the lilies and the pond than the smaller and darker other birds that were about. This image was one of many that I captured that morning and I hope its tranquil serenity is as soothing to you as that entire morning was calmly soothing to me.
