This image is taken from a slightly different vantage point and it places more emphasis on Pigeon Island and less on the nearby palms and flowers. I was torn between this image and the other one featuring more palms and flowers so I decided to let you enjoy them both and then decide which one you prefer. Who knows … maybe you’ll like them both! 🙂

So the write up below is the same one I used for the other image from this same location.

A couple of years ago I received an email from a couple who planned to vacation in St Lucia and they signed up for one of my Signature Vacation Photo Shoots.

En route to their villa there was a little detour that led to a hilltop location called Heaven which enjoys one of the most stunning views of the entire north end of Saint Lucia that I have ever seen. Then I got to their villa and came upon this spectacularly stunning view of Pigeon Island that was perfectly framed by the flowers and hedges adjoining the property and I knew that I’d be back to photograph it.

So I went off to my photo shoot and then returned about a week later to photograph the scene and I was lucky have a beautiful day. So I shot a series of pictures to capture the energy of the waves near the island as they transitioned into a white churned up mass of water as they neared the shore.

I filed those pictures away and never got round to reviewing them until I decided to place some of my top St Lucia images here on Etsy. By this time I was down to uploading my last two images before launching the site. So you can imagine both my shock and disappointed when on closer inspection I realized that while the flowers in the foreground were sharply in focus Pigeon Island was softly out of focus. While the island was not terribly out of focus and this would have likely gone unnoticed I simply couldn’t bring myself to use that image knowing that it wasn’t at my 100% best.

Rather than wallow in self pity I decided to just get up and go back to the location with the hope that conditions would be conducive to getting the perfect shot. Now lighting is everything and there is only about a 2 hour window of opportunity to capture the perfect image. And so much things must come together for that perfect image.

The window of opportunity is from about 9:00 – 11:00 AM. Then there needs to be clouds in the sky, but not so much that they block out the sun. Additionally, the wind must be sufficiently strong to create those rolling waves that create a sea of white as they approach the shore, and it had to be a time of year while Pigeon Island was still lush and green.
Fortunately this was the 2nd week in January and the rainy season ends in November. So we were in luck with the green; plus up till then January had seen a lot of rainfall co things were looking good from the greenery standpoint.

However I arrived at the location to discover that much of the beautiful bushes that had framed my last picture had been cut back, much to my disappointment. But on the upside the bougainvillea was more stunningly vibrant than last time around so this worked to my advantage. And the luck didn’t stop there as I couldn’t have asked for the clouds to be positioned any better, and the wind and the churn were just right too.

I spent about 20 minutes shooting variations of the wave patterns and left the location knowing that I had captured a masterpiece. In fact, in the end I was thankful that I had messed up the first time… and once again my Grandma’s words rang out in my head that “All bad luck is not in danger, and all in danger is not lost!”
