Sunset on Vigie Beach
Signed Kirk Elliott Prints
Vigie Beach is arguably one of the most popular open air health and wellness spaces in Saint Lucia. It is a beautiful mile and a half or so crescent shaped bay that sits next to Saint Lucia’s small airport. The island’s main cemetery also sits on this bay. Together these two realities have created the environment that has resulted in such a large expanse of open beach. With hotels occupying much of the prime beach area on many Caribbean islands this beach is likely to remain free of any such development for as long as the airport and the cemetery remain.
From about 5:00 – 7:00 AM Monday to Friday persons in St Lucia head off to Vigie Beach for a walk, a jog, a swim, or simply just to chill before heading off to work. In the evenings after work folks are back again for a repeat of the morning beach activities; though this time it’s usually a different set of people and not the same folks who were there in the morning. I like to go walking on the beach in the mornings as there are generally less persons about compared to the afternoon.
The peace and tranquility of the mornings allow me to breath in the fresh morning air, connect with my thoughts, and as if by magic inspiration often flows into me. The morning ocean views are simply stunning and no two mornings are ever the same. These morning walks inspire my photographic creativity and many of my images are shot on this strip of beach coming out of the inspiration of those morning walks.
Interestingly, the evening time energy is quite different from the morning’s despite it being the same beach. Most people leave work in the city at 4:30 PM so by 5:00 the beach is alive and bubbling with activity. There always seem to be more joggers at this time compared to the mornings and quite often their energies are at a higher level than what obtains in the mornings … almost as if they are trying to shed whatever might have weighed them down at work during the day.
Then there are the sports teams that show up to train; persons walking their dogs; folks who stop by to have a drink or two at the beachside bars before heading home, and so many more people just chilling and enjoying the evening ambiance. Simply put, Vigie Beach is truly an inspiringly magical slice of this Island Paradise I have the pleasure of calling home.
Then there are the sunsets! If you think no two mornings being alike is something special I invite you to just imagine the sunsets. Not only are no two sunsets alike, but literally no two 5 minutes at sunset are alike. The moving clouds, the shimmering ocean with the golden sun rays dancing across it as the surf gently kisses the shore – simply magical…
And as if this weren’t enough, then there is the magic of the Blue Hour. Blue Hour is the time after the sun has set but the outside hasn’t yet gone dark. During this time the sky can light up into brilliant cyans, crimsons, yellows and purples as well as a mix of other colours all in between. But being this close to the equator our Blue Hour is more like a Blue 5 – 10 minutes so you must be prepared and act quickly if you are to do it justice.
The day I shot this picture I arrived on the beach about ½ hour before the sun set so I could find the perfect spot and be ready for the beautiful colours in the sky. Funny thing though is there is no guarantee that the sky will deliver a spectacular lightshow as this is determined by both the amount and the type of clouds in the sky at sunset. If the clouds are big and fluffy, and dense and gray then the blue hour light cannot penetrate the clouds to create a stunning light show. I had been coming to the beach at sunset everyday for about a month with absolutely no luck. There were many days of thinking I would get beautiful Blue Hour pics only to have it all fall apart.

What would you have done had you been in my shoes – give up, maybe?! Well, I never lost faith and I simply took it that the universe was testing both my patience and my resolve to capture the beauty of a Vigie Beach Blue Hour. Then after nearly a month of coming down to the beach near sunset and waiting around, I was finally rewarded with a spectacular evening when the sky lit up and everything just seemed to glow.
Even the joggers and beach walkers seemed to have unconsciously collaborated with me by not being front and center of the frame as I shot the image, for remember all we ever get is a Blur 5 to 10 minutes! So, having captured this beautiful sunset at Vigie Beach I am delighted to share it with you, so that you don’t have to wait a month like me. And where ever you choose to hang it I hope it brings you as much pleasure, inspiration and satisfaction as I got when everything all came together so wonderfully.
Enjoy!
